Uster tests for cotton yarn

Uster test results document the quality of cotton yarn, whether it is open-end, carded or combed. Here is what the main values mean.

What the report shows

  • Evenness (CVm, %): variation of the yarn mass along its length. Lower is better.
  • Imperfections per kilometer: thin places (minus 50%), thick places (plus 50%) and neps (plus 200%). Fewer means a cleaner fabric.
  • Hairiness (H): the average length of fibers protruding from the yarn. It affects fabric look, pilling and weaving behavior.
  • Tensile properties: tenacity (cN/tex) and elongation (%), which show how the yarn behaves in knitting and weaving.
  • Count (Ne) and its variation, and the twist level.

How to compare results

  • Compare yarn of the same count and type. Combed yarn normally shows fewer imperfections than carded, and open-end yarn has its own typical profile.
  • Use the Uster Statistics percentiles as a benchmark: the lower the percentile, the better the yarn compared with the world average.
  • Check how many bobbins or cops were tested, the test date and that the report belongs to your lot.
