Pre-shipment inspection checklist
Checking cargo before it leaves costs far less than a claim after it arrives. This is a practical checklist for cotton fiber, yarn and raw silk.
The checklist
- Documents: quantity, grade, packing and shipping marks agree with the contract.
- Sampling: samples are taken randomly from bales or cartons according to an agreed plan.
- Quality: HVI or Uster tests on samples, visual check and moisture check.
- Quantity: count of bales or cartons and weighing of a sample.
- Packing and marking: bales or cartons are strapped, covered and marked, and the marks match the documents.
- Container: clean, dry, free of odors and damage, with the seal number recorded.
- Loading: supervised, with photos of the loading and of the container and seal numbers.
- Report: findings with photos, issued before the shipment is released.
Why it matters
A finding before shipment can be fixed or the lot replaced. A finding after delivery usually becomes a dispute, a delay and a cost for both sides.
